Corfu holidays bring you fascinating Grecian island beauty with a smattering of lively resorts. The island is a well-established holiday destination, with over one million tourists choosing a holiday to Corfu every year.
Holidays to Corfu take you to the most northerly of Greece’s Ionian Islands. Varying according to its coastline, Corfu lies from one to eight miles off mainland Greece, and is close enough to the other Greek islands for a spot of island-hopping. But most visitors tend to stay on the dazzling beaches during their Corfu holiday – occasionally venturing inland to see the various natural and archaeological wonders. The nightlife in Corfu’s resorts is eclectic and well-established, and there are great choices of restaurants, plus smaller eateries and cooling cafes.
Springtime opens the countryside up to endless inland walks, surrounded by brightly coloured wild flowers and native wildlife on your holiday to Corfu. Explore the hamlets and local villages, undisturbed and unchanged by time. Or if you want to practice your swing whilst on holiday in Greece, visit the 18-hole golf course. Nature-lovers will enjoy exploring the countryside and taking part in horse riding, paragliding, jeep safaris, and the numerous other activities available during Corfu holidays that bring the beautiful flora and fauna closer to view
The north-eastern coastline of Corfu lies off the coast of Sarandë, Albania, from which it is separated by straits varying in width from 3 to 23 km (2 to 15 mi), while the south-east side of the island lies off the coast of Thesprotia, Greece. The name "Corfu", an Italian version of the Byzantine Κορυφώ (Koryphō), meaning "city of the peaks", derives from the Greek Κορυφαί (Koryphai) (crests or peaks), denoting the two peaks of Palaio Frourio. In shape it is like the sickle (drepanē, δρεπάνι), to which it was compared by the ancients: the concave side, with the city and harbour of Corfu in the centre, lies toward the Albanian coast. With the island's area estimated at 227 square miles (588 km2), it runs approximately 40 miles (64 km) long, with greatest breadth at around 20 miles (32 km).
Two high and well-defined ranges divide the island into three districts, of which the northern is mountainous, the central undulating, and the southern low-lying. The more important of the two ranges, that of Pantokrator (Παντοκράτωρ - the ancient Istone) stretches east and west from Cape Falacro to Cape Psaromita, and attains its greatest elevation in the summit of the same name.
